Welcome to our game play guide. The world of Half-life 2 is an incredibly complex environment for a multiplayer game to take place in, and theres so much going on new players may struggle to keep up with the more experienced players and miss some of the fine points of the gameplay. So here's a guide to some of the tactics and tricks in the game. This game is instant fun for all levels of players but, to truly appreciate this game, you need to learn the levels well so you can really push the high scores in Co-Op and dominate in Racing mode.

In "follow freeman" there are two modes of play:

(1) Co-operative mode, and
(2) Racing mode.

W hen you connect to a server you can see the current mode of the game at the top left of the screen. The game mode can only be changed in the ready room by using the console command
  rcon game_mode "mode"
the available modes in the demo are "coop" and "racing" and they are very different to play. For a full description see here.
In Co-operative mode your goal is to get through the level as a team, points are awarded for killing NPC enemies and finishing the level. Extra points are awarded when two or more players finish, while if only one person finishes, the team loses points (remember this is CO-OP!).
When someone completes the level, a count-down to the next level is started and the others have to try and finish before the end of the count-down to receive points. So don't trigger the end level if your teammates are a long way back.
Total team points are shown on the bottom left of the scoreboard.
When playing Co-operative mode remember to play as a team, stick together, watch each others backs and co-ordinate your attacks. When you die, you're dead and have to watch the others play in spectator mode.
Health is limited, so make sure you share what is around (two guns are better than one!).
If by chance the whole team dies, then the level will restart again, you'll all start with the saved weapons, ammo, health and score.
Racing mode is dirty nasty Co-op on speed.
The goal is to rack up as many points as you can get, friendly fire is enabled! and so anything goes (and we mean anything!), but don't worry, you respawn at the beginning of the level with a anti-spawn kill device (limited invulnerability time).
Its like deathmatch within a Co-op game, try to out smart your friends and finish first to get the most points, like in Co-operation mode you get points for killing NPC enemies and finishing before the count-down timer to next level.
Here are a collection of points and tips made by our testers to help you out:
-You dont actually get any points for killing other players just npcs and finishing the race.
-Its all about the points, finish first and get the most points, don't finish in time and get NOTHING at all!
-You may wish to simply run past some NPCs so that they remain to slow down your opponents but beware you dont get surrounded.
-Killing every thing as you go does get you loads of points, but if you fail to finish you lose the lot.
-Don't waste your ammo if you don't have to, remember you don't get points for killing human players.
-Sometimes its better to run then fight! That includes both humans and NPC enemies.
-Be mean! Don't let others have it their way, plant tripmines, set-up flame barrel traps, block the way so that others can't get through.
-Tripmines are your best friend, use them to take out other players, just remember not to set one off yourself!
-Learn the layout of the levels, where would be best to plant mines and use any short cuts that you can find along the way.
-Often levels have areas where a player can attack other players who are much farther through the race - if you're smart you can intercept them.
-If you die, you'll have to start from the beginning and your points, health and ammo will be reset to what you had from when you came through the level before.
-Because of the saving system, it is always good to ensure that you have health and ammo at the end of a level, unlike most multiplayer games when a new level begins in this mod all players are not equal - you get what you saved.
-So if you get what you save it's always good to save some tripmines and grenades as they give you a big advantage on the next level.
-Kill someone mid way through the map (especially at a crucial point say as you open the gate on the final level) and they'll be back at the start, giving you a little more breathing room, watch out though because they can do the same to you.
-Points are cumulative through the chapter so dont worry if you lose the odd race its better to get a steady stream of points for kills and finishing the levels consistently.
-Stock up on ammo and kill any enemy NPC's if you know someone else will make it to the end of the level and you won't.
-Use the environment to your advantage - we've added grab so you can pick up objects, use this to throw objects behind you to slow down opponents, block doors and destroy anything that may aid the opposition.
-If you're not winning, maybe ally with other players to push forward and take out the race leaders. When you've caught up, you can stab your allies in the back and take all the glory.
